iPhone 5s - Worth the Money?

Another year, another phone purchase?  My wife and I have been iPhone users for several years now.  Her current phone was getting old and we felt it was time to upgrade.  That coupled with the fact we are both in IT it seemed time to get the current technology.  We knew the iPhone was the direction, but should we go with the iPhone 5s or 5c?

The technology for the 5s was an easy choice.  It has a better, faster processor.  The camera is slightly better for both still photographs and video.  One very nice feature of the 5s is the ability to take slo-motion video.  It's a feature that is nice for us as we watch our daughter grow up.  Plus, it will give us ammo when she does something funny and we can show her boyfriend!
Battery life is always important and both the 5s and 5c met our needs.  Getting through a business day without requiring a recharge is key.  Both support 10 hours of battery life during "talk time."

The fingerprint identity is nice, but wasn't a deciding factor between the two models.  Both my wife and I are setup on the same phone.  Instead of entering the 4 digit code to unlock the phone we just put our thumbs on the home button.  Setup was easy.  The phone asks you to move your finger around as its recording your fingerprint.  It does make opening the phone easier and was a pleasant surprise in using it.

Price is where the two start to differentiate themselves.  The 5s is $100 more than the 5c for each of the different memory capacities with the 5c 16 GB starting at $99 and the 5s at $199.  For the faster processor we felt the $100 was worth it.

The weight and size of the 5s is much better than earlier generations.  But as always, get a case to protect it.  It seems packing more "stuff" into a smaller area leads to a better chance of it breaking.  Ahh, memories of owning my iPhone 4 for about two weeks before I dropped it and cracked the glass face!

So far, after about 2 weeks of ownership, the iPhone 5s is worth the upgrade and I would recommend it.  Check out the Apple iPhone comparison page for more information.
